Meet 'Boobette', Emily!
Breast Cancer Awareness Charity, CoppaFeel has their own army of Boobettes, to help spread their important message. We get to know one such member, Emily...
We've caught up with our friends at Coppafeel!, a breast cancer awareness charity to find out more on their who's, what's and why's!
Boom: For those who are not familiar with you...tell us, who is CoppaFeel!?
Coppafeel: CoppaFeel is a breast cancer awareness charity that educates young people on the importance of checking their boobs regularly and knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.
Boom: Great, let's start from the beginning. How did the charity start?
Coppafeel: Our charity was founded in October 2009 by Kris Hallenga who herself was misdiagnosed with breast cancer twice at the age of 23, and now lives with secondary breast cancer.
After being diagnosed at the age of 23, Kris decided it was time to flip the switch on breast cancer awareness and bring it to the forefront of young people’s attention. One in eight women will be diagnosed with the disease at some stage in their life. CoppaFeel! is all about getting the message out that the sooner we get feeling, the sooner we become best chums with our boobies the sooner we will spot any changes.
Boom: To achieve this, what do you guys do?
Coppafeel: We aim to stamp out late detection and misdiagnosis of breast cancer by ensuring that people know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, know what their boobs look and feel like normally, check their boobs regularly throughout their lifetime and have the confidence to seek medical referral when they detect abnormalities. We do this through education programmes, such as our Boobettes and Uni Boob Teams, as well as reminder services including hijacking bra labels and providing materials for showers etc & our free text reminder service) and setting up PR stunts to get people talking about boobs.
Boom: Let's talk boobs. How do you check them?
Coppafeel: There isn't really a "one size fits all" method - but we've got a few pointers including getting to know the look and feel of your boobs, don't forget to reach towards your collarbone and armpits too!
Boom: What if we find something not quite normal happening?
Coppafeel: Get in touch with your GP as soon as possible and tell them your concerns. Most importantly, keep checking them regularly and use our handy reminder service!
More info on how to check your boobs can be found here.
