Throughout December, we are selling a special seasonal shake; The Merry Mixer. This festive shake is also raising money for The Felix Project. Daisy Nicholls tells us more about the charity and how the money raised will be used.
Hi Daisy! Can you tell us about The Felix Project?
The Felix Project is a charity that was set up in memory of Felix Byam-Shaw, who died suddenly of meningitis in 2014. We work with food suppliers and charities to reduce food surplus and food poverty. We collect food from supermarkets, wholesalers and other food suppliers – food that is fresh and nutritious, but cannot be sold for various reasons. We then deliver that food free of charge to a range of charities across London who provide meals, snacks or food parcels for their communities, who include the elderly, the homeless, those with mental health issues, refugees and asylum seekers and families and children. We simply want to see good food go to good causes.
Can you tell us a little more about your role?
I’m Administration Assistant here at The Felix Project and am based at our Park Royal depot in West London. It’s a busy time for us as we’re getting amazing response from our Christmas appeal. Lots of people are contacting us about donating money, donating food, volunteering and many other things! It’s my job to respond to these enquiries, help with odd-jobs at the warehouse and I’ve also been involved in launching our new Schools Programme – which has been great fun.
What are the challenges within your role (and the rewards)!
The most challenging part of my role is making sure I’m organised and that I manage my time well. I work with a few of the different Felix operations (West London, North London and evenings) so I must make sure I prioritise tasks. The most rewarding part is seeing what a difference we’re making and chatting with our wonderful, inspiring volunteers.
How will the money raised from our Merry Mixer shake be used?
The money raised from your Merry Mixer will go towards our new Schools Programme – the aim of which is to ensure no child in any primary school supported by The Felix Project ever goes to bed hungry. At the end of the school day, children and their parents/guardians will be guided to a welcoming Felix ‘market stall’ and be able to fill a Felix bag with a healthy and delicious selection of food to take home. Every £1 donated ensures a primary school child and their family has the food needed for a nutritious meal otherwise deprived to them. With 1 in 10 children in the UK living with parents who struggle to put food on the table – there is a real need for this programme.
Finally, what’s the one thing you do that always makes you feel badass?
